Ravinia Opera House Emerges World Center of Art
Ravinia in Illinois earns the title world center of operatic art after fifteen years of devotion. It hosts ten weeks of grand opera with top singers, drawing audiences from across the nation and abroad to a wooded lakeside setting near Chicago. Louis Eckstein’s vision sees Ravinia as accessible and educational, likened to Bayreuth and Oberammergau in spirit. Otto H. Kahn praises its natural acoustics, comparing the wooden pine ceiling to a Stradivari violin and noting that such sound cannot be built in New York.
