Divers near treas ure chests of Andrea Doria bank safes
Divers exploring the sunken luxury liner Andrea Doria say they have reached a Bank of Rome office within the 697 foot vessel believed to hold two safes. Expedition spokeswoman Elga Andersen offered no details on whether the safes were opened or if any fortune remains inside. The 1956 sinking killed 52 and rescued over 1,700. Estimates of treasure range from over $1 million to as high as $4 million, with much cash and jewels likely unrecoverable.
