At the Williams Street crossing in Huron a New York Central mail train struck a baby carriage, killing Mary Ann Ball age three and Ruth Arlene Ball eight weeks, fatally injuring their mother Mrs Ernest Ball 43. Six people died when a car suspected of a hit run sped down US 50, crossed the dividing strip, and crashed head on with an oncoming sedan near Livermore California. The other car carried Paul F Lockett 40 Hayward and his wife Pauline 38 a Naval shipyard guard. The Lockett car speedometer showed 80 mph.
