Midwest truck walkout threatens nationwide shipments
The walkout by six thousand drivers and freight workers, centered on Midwest routes, prompted predictions of government seizure of union firms within 48 hours. Officials said war shipments could stall as operators refused to move trucks to terminals. Meantime Detroit's major strike hit 7,000 GM workers plus 3,300 Briggs employees, slowing bomber turret production. Montreal Tramway workers also walked out, disrupting city transit.
