Tragedy at South Abbe Road Crossing in Elyria
A Conrail freight train struck a car on South Abbe Road late Saturday night in Elyria killing a woman passenger presumed to be the driver’s wife. The driver and a child passenger were injured and treated at Elyria Memorial Hospital. witnesses Douglas Strickland and David Mullens described a line of southbound traffic waiting for a slow moving westbound train.

Vermilion Man Dies in Morning House Fire
A 67 year old Vermilion man, Robert E. Palmer of 4888 Mapleview Drive, died from smoke inhalation in a morning blaze. Firefighters arrived around 6:30 am to a fire in the front bedroom, extinguished in 15 minutes with Palmer found beside the bed. Authorities say smoking in bed is likely the cause. Palmer lived alone, was a heavy smoker, and had worked at the Ford Assembly Plant in Lorain. Funeral arrangements are with Riddle Funeral Home.
