Elyria school board faces 1.7 million deficit in budget

Merthe Family Leads Elyria Store Name Changes Across Years

The Elyria retail column traces the store’s name changes from M Straus and Co to Biggs and Bowen Co and 1897 George Biggs and Co. In Sept 1897 D Lewis and Co occupied the store and ran a 17 year business on the same floor until 1907 when a second floor was added. In 1914 Lewis retired, Charles H Merthe became sole owner, and after 3 years the business was renamed C H Merthe and Co. Charlie Merthe had begun in an Amherst firm and then joined Biggs in Elyria. He sold principal interest to son in law William D Taylor in 1944.

The Perseid meteor shower peaks Friday but will be heavy tonight through next Wednesday.
