New York Day By Day By Charles B. Driscoll

A lively nightlife vignette at Longchamps depicts a celebrating couple in vintage 1890s attire. The man wears a Prince Albert style suit and white tie while the woman, in pink and white taffeta with a Watteau gown touch, exudes refined elegance as they dine and reminisce. The column shifts to public bathing and pool life in the metropolis, recalling Long Beach and Manhattan beaches, and musings on city pools and famous poets. A Grand Central cat and Times Square barber add local color as readers reflect on pace and calm in crowded New York.
