Elyria Mayor vetoes street paving ordinance
Mayor James A Hewitt used his veto for the first time, returning the council’s July 29 ordinance on street and subdivision acceptance with four reasons. He argues 30-foot pavings and 36-foot streets are impractical, that 3 1 2 foot streets burden property owners, and that the measure would raise lot prices. The veto ends with the claim it would discourage paving and push toward costly cinder streets.
