High winds hail and heavy rains disrupt Elyria events. A 3 inch-plus two day total caused flooding, downed tents and power outages. The 125th celebration extended to Monday with rain plans for a Sunday parade and agricultural show cancellations.
North and central Ohio endured severe storms Thursday with winds downing lines uprooting trees tearing roofs and flooding streets. Cleveland and London faced extensive damage though no injuries were reported. A later incident in downtown Cleveland involved a masked robbery at a tavern and a bank heist nearby with the victim released unharmed.
A severe storm in Cleveland and Shaker Heights toppled garages and damaged homes. One man reported a garage collapsed onto his car near the hospital. Dozens of power outages, flooded basements, and downed trees were reported across Rocky River, Fairview Park, North Olmsted, and Berea with Gulf Oil tanker damage estimated at 700000 dollars and several crews missing or injured.
A critically burned survivor died at Newport Hospital, raising the known dead to 16 after the collision of two tankers near Newport. Samuel Williams of Port Arthur Texas, a fireman on the Gulfail, was among four Gulfail crew listed as critically burned by officials.
Partly cloudy and cooler today and tomorrow with highs near 80 and lows around 64. Precipitation expected 1.35 inches through Thursday afternoon.
