Tornadoes swept Wisconsin Illinois and Iowa causing heavy property damage and many injuries with reports of several fatalities. A woman was found unconscious under a pavilion and multiple named residents and towns are listed in the wrecked areas.
A store bookkeeper Miss Carrie Dohbeck was lured by a telephone ruse at the Singer Sewing Machine Company. While she was away, an unknown man and an accomplice inside emptied the till of about $100, with Krueth in a rear room catching a glimpse of the man fleeing.
A Chronicle-Telegram report notes the League of Women Voters did not endorse candidates. A group of Lorain County women signed an advertisement praising Senator J F Burke, asserting his fitness and urging voters to support him for governor, though the league disavowed the statement.
Marco Popo- Vich, owner found guilty in Munichpel court after police found four stills at his home. He was fined $1,000 and costs, and sentenced to four years in county jail for nonpayment.
In Chicago on August 3 the Leopold and Loeb trial hears lay witnesses describing the two youths as mentally diseased. College friends testify to abnormal behavior and queer ideas as prosecutors seek a hanging verdict. The testimony, entered as part of the defense and prosecution’s race to finish, ends with planned further expert input.
Republican candidates George W. Harris James A White and Harry C Smith of Cleveland are to address the League of Women Voters meeting at the Court House at 7 30 this evening. L Davis and Governor Donahey may send representatives and Henry I Everest will speak. Senator J F Burke plans a rally at the Court House next Monday at 7 0.
Judge Lee Stroup a veteran Lorain County legal figure died last night after a year of poor health. Born October 10 1869 he served as solicitor prosecutor and judge before forming the firm Stroup Rice. Survived by wife son Thaddeus and grandson Ann Lee Hew funeral plans to be announced. Major Zanni arrives in Calcutta after long world flight despite rain and low clouds.
Aug 8 reports span Ras Taffari’s visit to the League of Nations in Geneva and a Spanish air force crash over the Moroccan front. Normal shipping resumes at Santos after the Soa Faulo revolution, with coffee cargoes and financial hubs reopen. Spain’s military junta claims continued rule, while Iceland considers a sea base for LL Smith and Nelson L. evacuation of the Ruhr emerges as the key Allied reparations challenge with cautious optimism for a swift solution.
Torain county teachers will gather in Elyria for a four day teachers institute starting Tuesday August 26. The program is under supervision of county superintendents and details have not yet been announced.
In Niles on August 6 a renewed clash between klan and anti klan factions erupted after a peace effort failed. A courtroom dispute led to threats and a gun remark, while police dispersed surrounding groups as merchants blamed the violence for lost business and women staying away.
Owners of the launch K ow seized by Sheriff Underhill seek possession return. Petition filed in common pleas court by Conrad Albracht William Kaple and Fred Schard claim ownership since construction and allege a written lease to Claude Tountaine for 194? season. They say no liquor was to be carried and ask ruling to restrain sheriff from disposing of the boat and return it to them.

Washington reports Sen Robert M LaFollette announces opposition to the Ku Klux Klan in a letter to Robert P Scripps, asserting equal rights for all citizens and condemning the group. Democratic candidate John Davis also states he has never been a member and will address religious intolerance in his acceptance speech.
The AFL executive council accused both Republicans and Democrats of dodging the Child Labor issue. It lauded Robert M La Follette for efforts to save American children while condemning the Republican platform for not backing ratification of the Child Labor Amendment. Democrats faced similar criticism for neglecting to urge ratification.
In Roseburg Oregon on August 8 a two and a half year old girl named Sylvia Rowe avoided a rattlesnake bite when her family cat attacked the snake as the child stepped on it. The cat pinned the reptile until it retreated under a house and was later killed.
