Diamond finesse risks in a bridge counterplay
In a 1935 King Features Syndicate bridge study, North dealer Roth faces a diamond dilemma. Declarer has eight tricks and must decide whether to finesse. South avoids the standard diamond finesse by leading the jack, plays the ace, and uses West’s cards to secure four no trump. The article explains why the diamond finesse fails when East holds the king or queen and outlines why the declarer’s best chance is to infer West has honors or East a singleton. Tomorrow: Crucial decision.

Mottl urges rollback on coffee price hikes
Congressman Ronald Mottl urged the Council on Wage and Price Stability to roll back 20 cent a pound coffee price increases and curb further spikes, citing frost damage to the Brazilian crop and a world over supply. He said action is needed to combat inflation and protect American households and coffee drinkers. The report also notes Dutch port activity fell four percent in 1974 with oil movement decline impacting trade.
