Oberlin police chief Ferber to quit Sept. 1

Oberlin Police Chief Robert K Ferber announced his resignation effective September 1. He leaves Oberlin’s model force to head a much larger Grosse Pointe Farms Michigan police department with 37 officers and about 12,172 residents per 1960 estimates. Ferber, 31, says he doubled the uniformed staff and modernized facilities in under three years. He applied for the Farms post last April and says the move is a difficult but welcome challenge. He notes the starting pay for a Farms patrolman is $10,50 yearly and would likely exceed Oberlin earnings. He will resign as chief at once.
