Elyria activist Pauline Leboda says 2160 signatures have been collected to force a referendum on the citys planned water rate increase. The effort seeks 1485 valid Elyria voter signatures to place the issue on the November ballot. The city council approved higher rates in July to fund a 5 million dollar improvements plan and a mandated corrosion control system costing about 1.45 million.
Olmsted Falls resident Mark Madere lauded Wal-Mart for supplying more than 10,000 white stockings after he sought help to aid the homeless. The effort followed a failed local sock drive and a prior sock hop event. Madere and fellow church member Fred Matthews helped spark the appeal, while Matthews has donated thousands of socks over the years.
Vincent Jackson 13 was struck and dragged by a Vermilion car on Liberty Avenue near Dick Baker Dodge. A chase by an unidentified man halted the vehicle 170 feet later, then nearby workers freed him. Vincent remains in stable condition at MetroHealth Medical Center with a fever but improving. Police continue to investigate driver Elizabeth Sprunk, 69, of Vermilion.

They cite safety concerns for residents, workers, and inmates amid problems at Youngstown’s private facility including escapes and multiple murders.
AVON LAKE residents on James Circle threaten a recall of Mayor Vincent Urb in and council members after a stalled vote on how to fix sewer construction damage. About 50 attended a private two hour meeting. 40 percent of the street is torn up. The $1.1 million project covers James Circle and nearby streets with completion planned by Sept. 23. residents blame Mark Schafer Excavating Co. for the destruction and seek full concrete replacement rather than asphalt.
