Severe South storms leave trails of floods and deaths
Heavy rain and thunderstorms swept the South from Texas to Virginia and Maryland. Remnants of a tropical system died in Texas hill country while another storm in north central Texas caused flooding. At least 23 people were killed in storm related deaths and some areas saw up to 18 inches of rain. Damaging floods threatened an earthen dam near Albany and scattered thundershowers stretched along the Atlantic, with minor urban flooding in Richmond and Norfolk. President Carter planned to visit Virginia as weather disrupted travel and caused numerous traffic accidents.

Weather update notes showers and thundershowers moving northward across all but northwest Ohio tonight. Lows range from the low 50s in the northwest to the upper 60s in the southeast. Showers end Sunday with partly cloudy skies and highs near 80.
