Badlands Colors And Buttes Mark A Desolate Marvel
The Badlands National Monument in southwestern South Dakota draws few crowds for such a vast landscape of carved rock and soil. Descriptions highlight tortuous pinnacles and color bands that shift with light, while geologic history explains marshlands giving way to arid wasteland. Early trappers and Dakota Indians named the land for its harsh traverse, and the 1890s confrontation at Wounded Knee is noted as part of regional history.
