Two truck drivers were injured when a westbound Allen Truck Co tractor trailer skidded on a wet hill near LaPorte and collided with an eastbound Arco Auto Carrier. About 2,000 guests rose as Malenkov, in a tan semi military tunic, took his seat, with United States Ambassador Charles Bohlen and other diplomats nearby observing the proceedings.
Five of 23 Americans aboard a giant RB-36 reconnaissance plane were sighted in the water about 420 miles west of Prestwick Scotland as rescue ships and planes converged on the scene. Heavy seas hindered efforts to land seaplanes, while American SB-29s reported four survivors in good condition and a fifth with uncertain status amid the icy surf.
London dispatch reports a Soviet list of top dignitaries omitted Interior Minister Sergei N. Kruglov, Beria’s successor, mirroring Beria’s earlier exclusion. The roster, led by Premier Georgi Malenkov and Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov, showed nine Presidium members visiting the Chinese exhibit in Moscow. No reason given for Kruglov’s omission.

Edward Hill 26 of 2422 Central Avenue and Frank Armstead 92 of Factory Street faced burglary charges in Justice C. C. Lord's court over the Avon Hardware theft. Both pleaded innocent with bonds set at 10000 each after investigators linked them to the July 27 burglary. Authorities recovered items including a check protector, two radios, 102 blank checks, and several firearms connected to the crime.
David Friedman died at 72 after an extended illness, at his daughter’s Lorain home. He was a chemist for 47 years with ties to Cleveland City Hall under Tom L Johnson. Survived by wife Lillian, two children Martin and Mrs Azi leen London, and six grandchildren. funeral Thursday at Deutsch Funeral Home Cleveland.
The first group of war prisoners released by the Communists began returning home from Panmunjom as Operation Big Switch opened. Seventy Americans and 322 other UN troops were freed, with half of the first 60 repatriates found to suffer tuberculosis and other lung diseases. Prisoners spoke of atrocities and a treacherous last-minute swap, while others recounted death marches and starvation. More prisoners are due to be released, with 400 UN POWs to go daily until all 12,736 Communist-held and 74,000 UN captives are freed.
Washington 83 A former volunteer official of the Democratic National Committee challenged House probes to cite him for contempt for not naming individuals involved in possible violations of the Corrupt Practices Act. Willburn S. Mayock, former chief counsel in 1944 and 1948, did not identify those who received $30,000 as a donation to the 1948 Democratic campaign fund, part of $65,000 from William S. Lasdon of Yonkers New York. Lasdon reportedly secured a favorable tax ruling saving about a million dollars over ten years. Mayock said the act limits contributions to campaign funds and claimed he distributed the money to others to give.
North Korean and Chinese prisoners released from Allied custody staged a heated propaganda event at Panmunjom. Prisoners tore clothing, hurled footwear at guards, and spat on Allied personnel while more than 2700 Reds were freed. A blood smeared petition and a throwing of a crutch were noted amid cameras and a staged reception.
William Cox resigns as executive head of Brownhelm School, creating seven vacancies across Firelands District schools including Brownhelm Henrietta Camden and Florence townships. J H Ehrman, district superintendent, announces openings for four high school teachers and three elementary teachers in Henrietta. Cox will become elementary principal in Midland Michigan. Ehrman will accept applications at Henrietta School.
