Chicago August 4 Stockyards journalists and clerks faced mud and rising cattle flows as Gen Hugh Johnson pressed to end a strike by 1,260 cattle handlers. Pickets and police stood by in the vast yard maze while tensions remained high and no violence occurred.
Taken From Our Files notes that Aug 4 1908 Parry S Williams of Evening Telegram is chosen as supervisor for the 4910 census in the Fourteenth Ohio District upon recommendation of Congressman Sharp and Ohio senators. He will oversee six counties. Also mentions Elyria efforts for a 1910 chiefs’ convention and Chief Whitney departing for Canton.

Elyria’s O. J. Shafer named district deputy grand exalted ruler as a key official for the Elks movement. Grand Exalted Ruler Shannon will outline policies with new deputies at conferences in Boston Newark Dallas Omaha and other cities while touring 10,000 miles in ten days aboard a flight piloted by Col. Roscoe Turner from August 10 through August 20.
