Scattered thundershowers this afternoon end tonight as cooler air moves in. Highs near 89 to 94 with lows around 62 to 67. Sunday will be mostly sunny and cooler with a Friday range of 58 to 90 degrees.
Dr. Charles P. Atkins of Coldwater Ohio boated a 680-pound bluefin tuna after a two hour fight in Tuna Rip waters near Wedgeport Nova Scotia. The fish measured nine feet long with a six foot girth. Guide team Louis V and Alf Boudreau assisted, with Jack and Louie Boudreau aboard. Weather and lake conditions included small craft warnings and winds 20 to 25 mph.
Midland, Michigan dispatch reports Robert Prosser told police he suffered a chronic left leg pain and attempted drastic self harm to relieve it. He was admitted to Mid hospital for treatment after the incident at St Vincents and Pauls Church carnival event.
Washington reports a heated House battle over jury trials as Congress debates civil rights legislation. President Eisenhower warned the Senate amendment would weaken the nation’s judicial system, while Senate leaders pursue a revised bill with a final vote expected next week.
British ground and air forces move into Muscat territory to support Sultan's forces against Oman rebels. Air Vice Marshal Laurence Sinclair said a limited force and Bedouin scouts may be used to secure supply routes and aid the assault on the rebel headquarters at Nizwa, while avoiding Arab towns.
Linda Kay Hartman, 18, from Mansfield was named Miss Ohio at Wooster after the Miss America pageant preliminary in front of 6,000 fans. A suspected burglar was shot and killed early today by a single bullet from a South Bend policeman. A Social Security card in the victim’s wallet identified him as Charles Thomas.
Patrolman Robert Watt testified he did not intend to kill the man. He said the bullet struck when the victim ducked low, entering the back and piercing the heart during the incident.
Inmates at the State Prison staged a brief disturbance at Point of the Mountain. Fifteen women and one man were held as hostages in the auditorium before the riot ended with all hostages unharmed. Prison officials reported few inmates involved and no prison property damaged.
Cleveland police sought two men in separate fatal cases. Annette Ferguson, 20, died from a Wednesday stabbing during a dispute with her boyfriend, while George Chapman, 36, was killed when William Miller, 36, allegedly shot him during an argument.
Eight year old Ronnie Godnick of Cleveland fell from a New York Central train steps while attempting a ride. Doctors initially considered amputation but later said plastic surgery may save the crushed foot.
Washington lawmakers consider a bill to refund government fines on overgrown feed wheat. Ohio farmers may receive about 59 thousand dollars in refunds for penalties since 1954. Bricker urged refunds while noting cases like John Donaldson who challenged a 205 penalty on 192 bushels.
Thomas Jackson Cozart twenty two of 101 Highland Court died in a collision on Rt. 20 at Case Road last night. A 1953 convertible crossed in front of a west bound Norwalk Truck Lines tractor trailer driven by Joseph Mack nineteen of Gibsonburg. Cozart’s car spun, rolled 337 feet, and he died on arrival at Elyria Memorial Hospital. The county’s twenty sixth traffic fatality this year. Witnesses included Mrs T J Grambley and William Miller. Survived by wife and two young daughters, mother, brothers, sister, and more. Funeral arrangements were made with Reichlin Funeral Home.
A London grocer's counter clerk cut into a half pound breakfast sausage and found a tiny gold watch beneath the meat. Doris Blasby reported the watch began ticking when cleaned and wound, thrilling her coworkers as the shop described the odd discovery.
