History of Elyria and Her People Chapter V
Lorain County formed from parts of Huron, Cuyahoga and Medina in 1822. By 1824 the county seat contest centered on Elyria, Black River and Sheffield, with Elyria winning the site and a temporary courthouse. The first Lorain County court opened May 24 1824 under Judge George Todd, with Woolsey Wells as prosecuting attorney and Lucinda Holcomb and Edward Durand appointed executors, marking the birth of a local legal system.
