Torrijos Dies In Jungle Plane Crash In Panama
Gen Omar Torrijos leader of Panama and head of the National Guard died when an air force Otter 205 crashed in jungle near Penonome during a 15 minute flight to a lumber complex. Also killed were the pilot a national guard escort and a woman dentist. The crash followed a storm with wreckage found after a 24 hour search aided by U S planes. President Reagan and former President Carter issued condolences. Torrijos aged 52 had stepped down as head of state in 1978 but remained commander of the guardsafter a 1968 coup.
