Strikes Curtail War Production Worldwide
Strikes halted war production across several plants with 25 000 workers affected including 5 800 Philadelphia transit staff who insisted their work stoppages were not strikes. Detroit saw 7 000 GM gear and axle workers walking out for a week while other disruptions hit Bull Dog Electrical and John A Roebling Sons. Some gains appeared as Montgomery Ward workers were reinstated after a pay dispute. Churchill praised Allied tank production while noting fighters in Normandy and Italy faced heavy strain as Soviet forces bore much of the war effort.
