Levy Debate Divides City Council Over Police Levy
Council members clash over a police levy after a special finance meeting, with Hill Scidig and Butkowski challenging the decision and Police Chief Rick Thomas defending the plan. The department, 34 officers strong, relies on a permanent levy from the 1970s to fund operations, and officials warn cuts would affect equipment, investigations, training, and a computer upgrade, while promising no drop in police service. Vasi recycling plan moves forward in Lorain County
Lorain County commissioners approved an 8600 feasibility study for a countywide recycling and education center championed by Commissioner Mary Jo Vasi. Betty Blair urged caution while Dan Billman noted avoidance of service duplication and job seekers from two firms express interest. Republican David Moore criticized the effort as propaganda and opposed the measure. The panel also delayed a decision on hiring an engineering firm to inspect cracked expansion joints in the county parking garage, with a study costing nearly 70000 and repairs expected to be much higher.
