Dennerll claims NAACP threat to Elyria schools
Cleveland-Cork president Norbert Dennerll accuses the NAACP of seeking to destroy neighborhood schools in Elyria by pushing an affirmative action policy. He, a candidate for the 13th District, says such plans lead to charges of racial imbalance and higher taxes to subsidize desegregation costs. He also links hearings before Judge Battisti to Ohio tax hikes and cites desegregation costs blamed on Cleveland. Local NAACP officials could not be reached for comment.

Lorain council rejects firemen contract proposal
Lorain council rejected a two year contract draft after a bargaining session. City negotiator Victor Wlaszyn and union president Ray Hunady voiced disappointment and planned counter proposals. The dispute centers on returning to a 52 hour work week after a 40 hour week since Jan 1 1979, a change that cost the city overtime pay. The contract expired Dec 31 and a tentative agreement was hoped for after last Thursday’s session. Wlaszyn would meet union reps Thursday night to push talks forward.

Sheffield eliminates part-time police ranks
Sheffield council vote abolishes captain lieutenant and sergeant ranks in the 11 member part-time police force. Mayor Len Pando cast the deciding vote with opposition from Howard Bliss George Fascko and Jerry Bialko who argued the five ranking officers earned their offices. Police Chief John Csubak criticized the move warning it would foster pass the buck and Steve Chezinski argued the village will need a full-time force eventually and that equipment given to part-time officers would impede operation.
