Highrise plans stir city politics and development

Local debate centers on a proposed 100 unit highrise at Chestnut and Elm by Robert Norris. Norris owes the city 47500, permits hinge on payment, and rival proposals linger for the 13 acre site. Medical complex plans by Raymundo de la Pena loom as a key use, with attorney James Blaszak negotiating. Community leaders push Norris or attorney Virgil Musser to appear before the development committee.

Lawson Stores Targeted as Robberies Peak in 1978 Lorain

Lorain police report that more than a third of local robberies in the first quarter of 1978 targeted Lawson Milk Co. sites, with 18 of 44 total crimes. Specific sites on 14th Street and Oberlin Avenue and 32nd Street and Pearl Avenue led the count, while Elyria saw four Lawson robberies of 32 statewide incidents. Authorities note urban areas bear most risk and Lawson has expanded 24 hour operations without cutting robbery rates. Law and local officials use stakeouts and off duty officers to deter incidents as design changes shift counters to fronts. In Cleveland and nearby suburbs, dozens of Lawson crimes occurred in the period, with 12 arrests in Cleveland and several other city cases.
