In Alamo, Nevada, low levels of radioactive iodine were found in residents' thyroids following an underground nuclear explosion near the Nevada test site. The Atomic Energy Commission said radiation escaped into the atmosphere Monday and the Public Health Service deployed mobile thyroid scanners to measure documentary data.

Navy jets destroyed a bridge and attacked a flotilla of supply boats while bombing junk lanes and destroying trucks. Air and naval forces flew 64 missions targeting Viet Cong routes as U S troops in Vietnam rose to about 250 000 with new reinforcements arriving from Alaska at Vung Tau.
