High Farm Supports Bill Faces Tough Fight
Washington reports the House Rules Committee and Agriculture Committee prep action on a measure to restore federal price supports for corn, wheat, rice, and oats. Supporters argue farm incomes are at a 13 year low, while opponents warn of market distortion and fiscal cost, risking a Senate challenge led by Allen Ellender. The bill aims to lift price supports to 90 percent parity, with a flexible system and a 82 to 90 scale, as President Eisenhower pushes reform to aid small farmers.
