AMA Opposes Doctors Draft Law and Wage Rise Plan
Congress heard complaints from partisan groups on the doctors draft, the proposed minimum wage increase, and the 1953 Refugee Act. The AMA urged Congress to reject a two year extension of the physician draft law while warning peacetime use is unnecessary. The Chamber of Commerce opposed raising the minimum wage from 75 to 90 cents, citing inflation risks. The American Veterans Committee urged deeper scrutiny of refugee admissions under the 1953 act, while Bricker Amendment support and Quemoy Matsu surrender debates filled other sessions. A two year extension of the Renegotiation Act passed the House, and a plan to study an atom powered merchant ship proceeds to hearings. Bread from surplus government wheat was proposed for unemployed workers.
