Fear as Main Cause of Bank Closings in Ohio
Ohio banks closed last year largely due to fear rather than mismanagement, says Ira J. Fulton in his annual report to Governor White. Fulton notes alarm over unfounded reports about bank solvency led executives to seek state takeover to shield depositors, and he opposes deposit guarantees as harmful to sound banking. He cites Western and Southern states where such plans failed, concluding well governed banks fared best in recent storms.
