County bed tax dispute shapes tourism promotion
Tax from C1 also funds a 3 percent bed tax to boost travel and tourism in Lorain County. The county commissioners seized control of the bureau after a heated battle with former leaders over agency direction. Avon’s new bed tax sparked an lawsuit by the Ohio Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus, arguing the 2014 city tax vote violated the law. Courts ruled the new bed tax illegal, while a prior 1999 tax was upheld. Contact Brad Dicken at 329-7147 or bdicken@chroniclet.com.
