Brilliant defense and endplay defeat a contract in bridge
South Sylvester Lowery faced a difficult bridge hand after a 3NT contract. He deduced West held the king of diamonds, won the ace of spades, then dumped the queen of diamonds. A spade return allowed a ruff, and a clever club lead, aided by a trumpet of entries, forced the defense. Lowery’s endgame plan leveraged a diamond queen feeding and club play to thwart two finesses, securing the contract.
