FBI opens $155 million state of the art crime lab in Virginia
The FBI unveiled a seven year in the making $155 million lab at the FBI Academy campus in Quantico doubling space to over 460000 square feet with five floors and 650 workers. The facility features separate evidence handling with 100 percent clean air and elevators for only tested items. DNA analysis and firearm matching dominate the work as the bureau aims to prevent crimes and solve cases while restoring trust after prior quality concerns. The lab processes about 1200 DNA samples annually amid national scrutiny and ongoing review of 193 samples tied to a whistle blower case.
