Baby sitter on probation in teen assault case

A 15-year-old girl, who helped babysit a toddler who died weeks later, was sentenced on a single count of felonious assault. She received intensive probation, no contact with the victim, a written apology, anger management, 50 hours community service, and restitution. The toddler, 2-year-old Ryan Scott, died from blunt head trauma after being in the foster care of the Lowery family in Lorain. The case ties to the foster home where he lived since January after removal from his parents amid squalid conditions.

Family pleads to drop hammer attack charges

The family of Jeremy Shelton seeks dismissal of three counts each of attempted murder and felonious assault after an April 17, 1997 hammer attack. Counsel cites a 1996 Ohio Supreme Court ruling allowing dismissal over prosecution objections when victims decline to proceed. Cowboy or do-gooder? Jury weighs bounty hunter

Elyria prosecutors painted Michael Kole as a gun-toting cowboy who frightened innocents and exploited bondsman privileges, while his Cleveland defense attorney argued he was merely doing his job to arrest two individuals in Lorain County. The four-woman eight-man jury deliberated about four hours, reaching verdicts on three of eight charges before weekend adjournment.

In Elyria 93 year old Scotty Davis TI volunteers most days at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky watering lawns and chatting with veterans. He earned a Waterford crystal statue and a $1000 charity donation for his 20 to 30 hours monthly service over four to five years. His parents, long time volunteers, praise his dedication.

Support for state sales tax increase fades in Ohio

A Cincinnati AP report notes that the Ohio Poll finds 51 percent of likely voters oppose a penny per dollar sales tax hike for schools, 37 percent support it, and 12 percent are undecided. The University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research conducted a 633-person telephone poll from April 13 to 21.
