East blames Midwest for air woes amid smog study
An environmental group and a Northeast utility report that coal plants in Ohio and other Midwest and Southern states emit vast nitrogen oxides, fouling air hundreds of miles away on the East Coast. The study calls for tougher cross region emission controls to curb long-range pollution. It names Atlanta-based Southern Company, Tennessee Valley Authority, and American Electric Power as major sources and discusses the impact on New York and other states. The report, by NRDC and Public Service Electric and Gas Co in partnership with Pace University, cites 1995 emissions and argues for equitable standards as Midwest plants prepare to sell power in the Northeast.
