Heart man dead in Ky

Artificial heart recipient Jack C. Burcham died Wednesday night in Louisville at age 62. His kidneys had been failing since before the operation ten days earlier. The AP report notes the death occurred in Kentucky.

Ohio House approves bill limiting local government liability

The Ohio House passed a measure 78 to 15 to curb lawsuits against political subdivisions amid Supreme Court rulings. Rep Vernon F. Cook said it stops short of sovereign immunity, allowing certain actions for death injury or property loss. Officials warn of rising insurance costs and larger city premiums, with Elyria estimating a jump from 200000 to 400000. The cap was raised from 250000 per person and 500000 per action to 1 million for all parties.

Accord Reached in Guyton Case as Trial Near End

A $200 086 settlement was reached just before a $1.95 million suit by Denver and Helen White against Lorain County and its housing authority went to the jury. The Whites accuse the county over alleged negligence in hiring and supervising Ernest Guyton Jr., a CETA worker who killed Mildred White in 1983. County officials warn punitive damages could strain the treasury and seek insurer action.
