Sales tax bill bogs up in Senate
Columbus April 24 The two per cent general sales tax measure, long treated as dead by the Ohio House, faced a setback as the Senate taxation committee voted seven to one to postpone further action. Sen Will P Haynes proposed a plan to raise about 28 million for the program, with 12 million for local subdivisions and the rest for schools. Senator D J Gunsett backed a gross receipts tax yielding roughly 46.5 million for schools and over 11 million for localities. Observers doubt passage in both chambers. Governor White urged updating utilities funding to 400,000 annually for the Public Utilities Commission to expand personnel and speed cases.
