Amherst Village Council to seek levy for new fire truck
S. Amherst voters will decide on a levy in November to fund a new fully equipped fire truck costing about 28000 dollars. No bids were advertised yet, but the move is needed to meet state and insurance regulations. The council also approved 853 dollars for Elm Street repair with South Amherst Builders Supply Co. as contractor. Mayor Jack Walker scheduled spring clean-up May 9 through 11 with trash rules. A May survey will gauge views on pending sanitary sewer, income tax, and sidewalk legislation, from May 1 to 31.

Amherst approves gas rate hike after lengthy talks
Five months of negotiations with Columbia Gas of Ohio ended with the Amherst council passing an ordinance raising gas rates by six tenths of one percent. The average user will pay $1.52 more monthly, from $15.36, while the firm cites a $52 savings per customer from the deal. The ordinance sets tiered charges per 100 cubic feet, with a 6.2 percent return forecast for the company, and compares favorably to the prior 7 percent asked. In other business, council second-read an ordinance to grant permanent status to water works employees, previously classified as temporary since Amherst Water Co. acquisition in 1964.

Westview taps sewage links eyed by two cities
Lorain County Commissioners asked Berea and Strongsville to consider tapping into their sewage facilities for Westview Park Subdivision. Berea Mayor Munkasey said no guidance exists to justify approval. Strongsville Mayor Behr requested detailed information from Lorain County Engineer Roberts. Deadline to respond is May 5. Public hearing earlier discussed using existing plants as an alternative to building a new disposal plant. Westview project total cost estimated at 700000 dollars with a front foot assessment of 25.89 dollars, which residents oppose as excessive.
