The enigmatic artist dies Thursday in his Minnesota studio. The Rock Hall of Famer created hits like Purple Rain and 1999 and leaves a lasting global and local impact.
Marcia Ballinger, 54, was chosen by the Lorain County Community College District Board of Trustees as the college's sixth president and first woman in the role since the 1963 founding. She will succeed Roy Church, who retires in July after 30 years, with finalists including MaryAnn Janosik and Ray Michael Di Pasquale. Ballinger aims to build on Church's foundation and broaden access to higher education, continuing the college's history as Ohio's first permanent campus established in 1966.
Marcia Ballinger will serve as provost and vice president of academic and learner services at Lorain County Community College. She brings a Ph D in higher education from Walden University and previously led marketing and community relations at LCCC.
Lorain Ohio's Super Kmart on Leavitt Road will shut in September along with 67 other Kmart stores and six in Ohio including locations in Ashtabula Eaton Fremont Lima and Springboro. The Lorain store opened in 1993 and Sears also plans to close ten Sears stores including one in Marion. Local officials stress worker support and county programs to aid displaced staff.
Edward S. Lampert, chairman and CEO, states the decision to close stores is difficult but necessary to strengthen the company, fund transformation, and restore profitability for Sears Holdings.
Summer Shalodi 30 faces murder involuntary manslaughter and other counts in the Dec 13 death of Nadia Nicole Gibbons in Lorain County. Coroner says head trauma and alprazolam intoxication contributed. investigators allege benzodiazepine was given to the child. Shalodi left the child unattended earlier and reported concerns to police at her Driftwood Drive home.
Doug Edwards a former North Ridgeville city employee pleaded no contest to theft in office. The 56 year old was fired in January 2015 from the French Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant after an investigation found he performed city work only about one third of the time over a 14 day period between November 10 and December 12, 2014.
