British scientists unveil model predicting US hurricane strength
British researchers from University College London describe a computer model in Nature that uses wind patterns from six North American sea regions to forecast U S hurricane intensity from August to October. The approach, tested on 1950 to 2003 data and real time in 2004, showed 74 percent accuracy for depth above or below average and outperformed other seasonal prediction methods despite not forecasting peak strength factors like El Nino.
