Rock singer pursues opera path at Iowa
Rob Eckert, 21, a University of Iowa sophomore, swaps rock guitar for opera after hearing Luciano Pavarotti’s Greatest Hits. He learned Italian, studied in Italy, and now sings Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni under Beaumont Glass. Though serious about opera, he still writes songs and plays in a rock band.

Toledo student uncovers long forgotten nitrate film collection
University of Toledo theater student Bob Uhl found a Tem perance Michigan barn stash with about 200 nitrate reels. Library of Congress expert Paul Spehr said the collection is unusually large for surviving films and will be stored at Wright Patterson while scholars sort it. If authentic, a 1920s James Cruze work may be among the reels, hinting at a long lost film legacy.
