Caretakers appointed for Meyer Goldberg stores in Lorain County

Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Paul Mikus issued a temporary order naming six Meyer Goldberg supermarket managers as court caretakers to run stores and pay salaries while overseeing revenues. Three outside overseers were appointed and a hearing on the largest claim, Scot Lad Foods for 292,817, was set for today. Claims total 446,122 with several creditors pursuing past due accounts.

Suspension overturned in Beal case over vague charges

Elyria Civil Service Commission overturned a 10 day suspension of Captain Eugene Beal, 23 year veteran, saying the charges were vague and unclear and remanded to the police chief for possible re filing. The panel urged consulting the city solicitor on civil service rules and noted potential re filing. Beal expressed relief and hoped the matter would end, while another case: David Deninger, 40, former Buckeye Ford owner, was sentenced to 18 months in prison and fined $500 for eight counts of attempted grand theft tied to auto title manipulation in 1976.

Lay teachers to return to Cleveland Diocese high schools

CHALTA members authorized to return Monday ending a strike begun April 3 at ten diocesan high schools in Cuyahoga Lake Summit and Lorain counties. The union says substantial movement in negotiations remains and federal mediator Harold Gold will supervise next week talks. Enrollment totals 8,400 pupils with about 315 lay teachers affected.

Lorain to gain 160 construction jobs from ore dock

Republic Steel plans a $20 million iron ore pellet terminal on Lorain lakefront with up to 160 jobs for millwrights laborers carpenters and teamsters. Johnson Brothers Corp will oversee construction beginning next month with completion aimed for August 1980.
