Lorain and Sandusky notes cover a car collision at a crossing leaving one dead and one hurt, while a guardrail incident near Route 113 injures minors. American Opportunity Week observance gets support with displays planned by Elyria Industries.
Maj. Gen. Ali Hayyari resigned after two days as chief of staff of King Hussein's Jordanian army and fled to Damascus seeking asylum. His successor was not announced. Hayyari had reluctantly accepted the post amid turmoil that included the ouster of pro-Soviet Premier Suheiman Nabulsi and a tense Palestinian sector movement.
Severe spring storms lashed the central U S with tornado warnings for Texas and Wisconsin and threats of thunderstorms in northern Illinois. At least 12 people were killed across Wisconsin Illinois Kansas and Nebraska with deaths from tornadoes crashes and accidents. In Wisconsin three tornadoes hit Necedah Burlington and Kendall. a 60 year old man died after a funnel tossed him into a field. a Burlington housewife suffered a heart attack during a tornado watch.
Thunderstorms and warm humid air loom for Easter as Ohioans plan sunrise services and egg hunts. In Cleveland Edgewater Park saw 5000 eggs found amid light showers. many churches schedule sunrise services and Easter rites. A separate report from Medina details Thelma Emerick, a 41 year old mother, robbed, kidnapped, and bound near a county road by two gunmen.
The Veslefjell led by Oranje Lines aims to be the season’s first foreign ship to reach Port Cleveland docking late tonight or Sunday with diesel engines and Scotch whisky aboard. Civic leaders will honor the captain with gifts and a citation. In a separate report, Mrs. Emerick described being bound and robbed after her car was forced off Ohio 3 near Medina on the way to Charleston for Easter week. She and her mother Mrs. Mary Murray and two children were involved. suspects remained at large.
A 24 year old man killed his former girlfriend Helen Griffith during Good Friday services at Holiness Church in Cove Arkansas then killed himself. A nearby mother and a 6 year old boy were wounded by a stray bullet. Sullivan fled to Nanchito Oklahoma where his body was found in a car. Deputy Hobart Hensley said the shooter shot through a church window and took only about 70 dollars from the victim.
Augusta Ga August 1956 President Eisenhower signed legislation allowing the Treasury to lift interest rates on government savings bonds to 3 1 4 percent. The move aims to boost public saving and fund national debt with higher yield.
The president approved six bills including an E and H bond interest measure to boost low denomination savings bonds. He also authorized a portrait for the Supreme Court building, a 320 million supplemental fiscal 1957 appropriation, and Alaska delegate inclusion. Mental Health Week was set for April 28 to May 4.
Pope Pius XII will give Easter Sunday address from St Peter's and bless the city and world urbi et orbi. Vatican Radio will televise and worldwide audiences, with up to quarter million in St Peter's Square. The vigil begins at 7 pm and midnight masses follow in major basilicas.
Ronald E. F. Hummer, 23, of 454 Earl Ct, died at 2 10 a m when his 1955 convertible left Rt 10 at a curve near Rt 301, rolled into a plowed field, and overturned twice. He was pronounced at Elyrian Memorial Hospital with a fractured skull and a broken neck. The county’s ith traffic fatality this year, down from 2 at this time last year. Hummer, born in Elyria on Mar 19 1934, a Elyria High School graduate class of 1952, joined the U S Marine Corps after graduation.
The obituary notes a Korea veteran who served 14 months there and worked as a UPS driver. He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Washington Avenue Church of Christ. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs Paul E Hummer and sister Mrs Edward Pahl Vermilion on the Lake. Visitation at Wainwright Funeral Home Sunday 7 to 9 30 p.m. and Monday 13 30 to 5 30 and 7 30 to 9 20 p.m. Funeral Tuesday 2 p.m. conducted by Rev Henry K Shaw. Burial at Brookdale Cemetery.
In Cleveland, mechanics and authorities investigated a Friday incident in which a single engine Piper plane landed in a suburban yard after a kidnap attempt. Pilot Russell H. Larson, 30, of Poughkeepsie, NY, was injured as the would be kidnapers fled in a Lakefront 119K model car. Deputies hunted for the suspect vehicle and car occupants with the Medina Sheriff’s Office and High Patrol alerted.
Edward O'Brien awoke Friday to a startling intrusion as an automobile and three suspects crashed into his Los Angeles bedroom while fleeing police. The mishap left the room damaged and the suspects missing, with authorities investigating the unplanned entrance and potential injuries.
Police pursued a six-foot blond suspect driving a green sedan after a 19 year old Patricia Ruland was beaten with a claw hammer during an attempted rape in Brooklyn. Ruland died from severe skull fractures after being dumped in a gutter. A prior attack on another girl in the same neighborhood is linked to the case. Deputy Chief Inspector Henning led Brooklyn West detectives in the search.
Washington officials disclosed that American economic and technical aid to Israel is being resumed after a cutoff last October when Israeli forces attacked Rayot. Talks on details are under way in Washington and Tel Aviv with estimates of returning personnel rising as aid plans are clarified.
Sovetskaya Russia says an American woman tried to smuggle about 40 silver items from Russia. Officials confiscated the pieces at Moscow airport after she failed to declare them. She arrived mid December and visited relatives in Soviet Armenia. American embassy not informed.
