Laundon Family in Elyria Commerce and Transfer of Property
The Laundon family shaped Elyria’s business scene from cattle trading west of the Missouri to the Cheapside market site later known as the Laundon block. William Laundon Jr sold to John Savase in 1860 and partnered with Edward Dages in cattle shipments to Buffalo and Pittsburgh in 1867 before retiring and buying land in 1868. He entered ice business in 1880 and passed meat and ice ventures to sons Arthur and Burton in 1890, with Arthur continuing Laundon Bros market business from 1908 onward. William died in 1909 at age 72. Arthur’s early education included Oberlin Business College and he began assisting his father at age nine, later selling meats to farmers.
