A UPI report notes that pepper import duties formed a significant portion of early federal revenue. By the early 1800s the Salem Massachusetts Customs House had collected over 3 million dollars in duties, largely from Sumatra pepper, amounting to about five percent of annual government expenditures.
At Brecksville Veterans Hospital in Ohio, compulsive gamblers receive treatment similar to medical patients. Since the program started two years ago, 45 gamblers have been treated, staying about six months, with therapy, possible medication, and involvement of spouses, plus Gamblers Anonymous meetings both in and outside the facility.
Christine Gibson and John David Ertl announce their engagement. Miss Gibson, a Lorain High School 1969 graduate, attends Lorain County Community College and works for the Lorain Metropolitan Park District. Eight Cuyahoga County branches hostesses welcome about 8 400 members from eight Ohio branches while division officers are elected. Dr Anne Campbell cites AAUW as the nations largest women s education organization with about 182 000 members.
Elyria BPW will hear Jim Doney of WJW-TV as guest speaker at the May 20 dinner at First Congregational Church. Open to the public, the 6 30 p m dinner tickets from Edith A Terrell or any member. Ten delegates and alternates to the state BPW convention in Columbus were chosen at the Loraine County Joint Vocational School dinner meeting.
