Chore Service aids seniors in home upkeep across county
The Senior Citizens Association runs a federally funded Chore Service allowing volunteers to perform heavy cleaning, repairs, and maintenance for residents over 60. Donations are optional, with no charge to the client. services are available countywide from four part time workers. Charles Phillips of Elyria recalls chauffeuring prominent residents including Mrs. George Gates Stevens and Mrs. George Tufford for the Gates family at Monteith Hall. Born 1904 in Wellington, he began driving at 12 on rural roads and later worked for Lorain Elyria routes. He recalls trips with the Gates family to Saltier Point and Buffalo via boat, noting the era of seven passenger Packards Lincolns and Cadillacs and the custom of chauffeurs serving households with full staff and modest yard work duties.
