USW official rejects across-the-board concessions in steel talks

Frank Valenta of United Steel Workers District 28 insisted steel firms must press Washington for any concessions and warned against blanket givebacks. He cited Reagan era policy shifts and a stalled Carter-era commission on imports, while noting no official request to reopen the master contract ahead of its August 1 1983 expiry. He urged identifying true need for concessions and tying them to administration changes.
