German detachments advanced toward the Swedish frontier firing on police near the Norway Sweden line. No Swedish casualties reported. Germans halted by border police and apologized. Oslo radio says Vidkun Quisling replaced by Ingolf Christensen as demobilization chief.
County Treasurer Walter J. Wright stated that about 23 300 of 109 000 dollars in debentures paid off by the Andwur and Depositors Mortgage Loan companies will be applied to interest as per Prosecutor Howard R. ler s opinion. The two companies paid 60 000 and 349 000 respectively to reduce principal, not interest due at maturity in June 1942, prompting Wright to deduct interest from these payments and apply the rest to principal. An additional 12 000 dollar check from the Depositors Mortgage Loan Co remained uncashed awaiting bank direction, and Wright will treat it the same as prior payments if the bank does not withdraw it.
Cloudy with light rain in the south tonight and Wednesday. Cooler in central areas tonight. Distant disturbance remains centered over Utah while temperatures rise over Montana and the Dakotas. Temperatures moderate in the lower Mississippi and Ohio valleys and Atlantic states, cooler in the Sage region and northern and central plains. Paris reports Premier Paul Bernaud told the Senate that Germany lost 30 percent of its line ships plus 78 000 tons of merchant vessels sunk damaged or captured. Reynaud said Allies captured Narvik in northern Norway and noted German cruiser strength destroyers and other ships suffered significant losses.
The British steamer Stancliffe was torpedoed off the north coast of Scotland on April 12. Sixteen survivors were landed today after eight bodies were found in their lifeboat, and twenty four aboard were lost. One survivor died later. a second lifeboat was smashed as the Stancliffe went down.
London dispatch reports that Sweden ordered all air raid precautions workers to report ready and closed southern and western ports including Gothenburg to foreign ships. The directive extends the precautions countrywide after earlier harbor closures and radio jamming disrupted the Stockholm broadcast.
Secretary Butler told the House that British forces have landed on the Faroe Islands. The Danish governor agreed to grant facilities to prevent German occupation, aiding defense northwest of Scotland.
Foreign Minister Paul-Henri Spaak told the Senate Belgium will not abandon neutrality or independence. He rejected Allied pressure for small neutrals to seek Franco- British protection before it is too late. The government will not accept any succession altering its neutral path.
British heavy cruiser of 10 000 tons was sunk by German airplanes off the Norwegian coast on Monday according to the High Command. The loss would include about 650 to 700 officers and men. The communique also said a Sunderland type flying boat, referred to by the British as a flying fortress, was destroyed.
Front dispatches report sharp fighting between German and Norwegian forces in the Kongsvinger sector northeast of Oslo. Kongsvinger was evacuated by Norwegian troops who continue fighting in the surrounding hills near the Swedish frontier, about 12 miles from the border.
The council passed a resolution to submit a half mill relief levy for one year to voters on May 14. It would raise 21000 for relief welfare and hospitalization to cover outdoor relief costs and indigent hospital bills. Mayor Petro noted a 55 percent vote suffices for one year, and relief funds may run dry by June.
The council unanimously approved a resolution urging the state liquor department to stop issuing new licenses for Lodi street establishments. Other actions include traffic light requests for Broad street near Garford School, zoning change on Taylor street, macadam paving on Bond street, concrete paving on 18th street, and emergency ordinance refunds for old wine licenses. An advance tax of 25 800 from the real estate tax, reimbursements for mayor travel, a 125 payment for sidewalk injuries, vacating an alley off Lawrence street, and purchases including an air compressor and a new police car were approved or tabled for later.
In Bucharest on April 16 a government decree forbade wheat exports except for existing contracts. The move aims to secure home supply due to harvest uncertainty and many farmers joining the army. The decree also reserves gasoline for military use and notes it does not halt oil exports to Germany.
Preparations underway at Elyna High School for the annual Spring concert on April 26. The senior a capella choir directed by J. Martin Beck will perform most selections, with a few soloists yet to be chosen. The choir comprises 64 members.
Crown Princess Ingrid gave birth to a daughter in Copenhagen. The infant is the first child of Ingrid and Crown Prince Frederick, who wed May 24, 1935. Ingrid is a daughter of Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden.
The Chronicle Telegram reports negotiations are under way for the sale of a substantial interest in Elyria theatres from John Pekras to Cleveland parties. Pekras seeks relief from some operating duties while retaining policy and staff, with new associates from the film industry joining him.
Denison University in Granville announces a 25000 gift from Percy L Wiltsee of Cincinnati to establish the Jessie King Wiltsee professorship in music in memory of his wife. Prof Karl H Eschman head of the Conservatory of Music is named the first holder of the chair.
Toledo news reports 17 year old Melen French of Sylvania was killed when an automobile struck her bicycle yesterday. The incident occurred as she rode near her high school route, and authorities continue investigations into the crash.
Dr. BD W. Philo 68 coroner of Sandusky County was in serious condition in a Fremont hospital after a fall in his bathroom. He suffered a concussion and was found unconscious by his wife several hours later.
Stockholm April 16 Norwegian government issued a formal statement detailing a four hour battle as German warships entered the Oslofjord and pressed 13 demands, including armistice terms and control of fortifications, communications, censorship and propaganda.
J Burr Taylor of the Western Actuarial Bureau will speak at a noon luncheon Thursday at the Y M C A gymnasium. The event, sponsored by the Elyria Chamber of Commerce with Kiwanis and Rotary, promotes a downtown fire inspection by 40 inspectors for safety in public buildings and churches. Mayor Petro urges public cooperation for the April 18 survey conducted by the Ohio Fire Prevention Association with 40 inspectors and 40 Boy Scouts assisting to educate on fire safety.
