IMF warns deficits threaten global growth and U.S. economy
The IMF warned soaring U.S. budget deficits could drag global prosperity, forecasting a 4.2 percent drop in world output by 2020 and a 3.7 percent slowdown in U.S. growth if not addressed. It noted higher U.S. borrowing would push up global interest rates and curb capital globally. The IMF projects Bush’s deficit at 521 billion this year, with possible relief if halves to 237 billion by 2009.
