Sea turtles use magnetic fields like GPS for navigation
UNC researchers Kenneth Lohmann and J Roger Brothers show loggerhead turtles nest on beaches with similar magnetic fields and become genetically similar, indicating magnetic fields predict genetic similarity more than distance. Findings aid conservation by highlighting magnetic field changes from structures can alter nesting choices.
