Lorain pursuit of manpower boosts halted by Blue Cross rise
Lorain officials report a 125 percent Blue Cross rate hike effective June 6, halting plans to reinstate manpower in departments. Auditor Koscho says the city will pay about $85,000 more this year and $140,000 next year for hospitalization coverage. The city already spends roughly $11 million annually, with revenue up $124,000 year to date, but the extra funds may be redirected to the Blue Cross increase as leaders consider switching providers.

Stifel trial delayed over records in bomb murder case
In Cleveland, a Cuyahoga County Common Pleas hearing on sealed records in the Orville Stifel II case was continued to Monday. Federal prosecutors urged public access to prove Stifel’s 1968 Lorain bomb murder conviction was valid. Stifel, paroled in 1980 after 12 years, was accused of a letter bomb to Daniel J Ronee, fiancé of Stifel’s ex, Cheryl Mae Jones. The 1976 legal malpractice suit against Stifel’s original attorney surfaces as a basis for vacating the conviction via FOIA documents. Prosecutors in 1979 alleged suppression of threats by the victim’s estranged father.
