Debts Threaten Independence Truckers Nationwide

National Independ ent Truckers Unity Committee warns that over 70 percent of independent U.S. truckers may go out of business this year due to truck mortgage payments. At a Memphis meeting, NITUC urged a national refinancing plan from banks regulators and officials. Chairman William J. Hill cited economic slowdown as the cause and floated a possible mortgage extension and interest relief, with talk of a broader moratorium if needed. Hill noted most independents pay 400 to 1000 dollars monthly for their rigs. The MTUC also proposed voluntary CB radio channel changes to clear emergency Channel 9.
